In the race to be the next Lewis County commissioner, Bill Schulte grabbed a comfortable lead over Lyle Hojem Tuesday night when initial election returns were released just after 8 p.m.

The 52-year-old Schulte took 55 percent of the countywide vote, with 10,068 to Hojem’s 8,340. The county still has 9,650 votes on hand left to count on Friday, with an undetermined number that will come in by mail.

Lewis County Auditor Gary Zandell declined to call the race, but recognized Schulte’s substantial lead.

“Hojem has a very steep hill to climb,” Zandell said.

Vehicle’s Mirror Strikes Pedestrian

A Chehalis woman walking along a shoulderless county road was injured when she was hit in the back by the passenger-side mirror of a passing vehicle on Sunday, according to the Washington State Patrol. The impact broke the mirror off the vehicle.

Cindy B. Bauer, 52, was taken to Providence Centralia Hospital with a back injury, and was treated and has been released.

Troopers were called about 10:30 a.m. to the incident along the 2600 block of Prairie Road, west of Onalaska.

The driver of the 1999 Mercury was Edward L. Harvey Jr. 65, of Chehalis.

The Washington State Patrol listed the cause of the incident as failure to yield to a pedestrian.

 

Randle Man Hospitalized After Crashing Into Tree

A Randle man was at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle this morning with multiple injuries after a wreck Friday south of Randle.

Gary B. Coker, 55, suffered a broken pelvis, cuts and bruises, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Troopers were called about 5:40 p.m. Friday about the crash that occurred on the 2100 block of Cispus Road.

The 1992 Ford Ranger he was driving was totalled when he hit a tree, the state patrol reported.

The Washington State Patrol reported alcohol was involved, and Coker was arrested for driving under the influence, but not booked into jail because of his injuries.

 

Veterans Day Assembly at Centralia High School

Centralia High School will honor military veterans on Monday at a Veterans Day assembly from 8:55 to 9:25 a.m.

The program will include the Centralia High School band, several readings from soldiers in boot camp, Vietnam and Iraq and a visual presentation recognizing staff and recent CHS graduates who have served, or are currently serving, in the armed forces.

 

Free Car Washes for Veterans Scheduled

The staff and management of The Wave Car Washes, with locations in Lacey, Olympia, and Centralia, want to recognize the area’s veterans with a free car wash on Tuesday.

Veterans are encouraged to take their vehicle to any Wave Car Wash location and tell them that they are a vet, or show their military identification to get a free car wash.

This is all part of a national program called Grace For Vets.

Turkey Trot to Take Place in Centralia

Children 11 years and younger are invited to run in the annual Turkey Trot Saturday, Nov. 22. Check-in will be at 9:15 a.m. with the first run starting at 10 a.m. There will be a fee of $5, or $4 with a donation of a non-perishable food item. All courses are within the perimeters of Borst Park, Centralia. The distance of the courses will be split up by age groups.

All participants will receive refreshments and a “turkey treat.” Prizes awarded to the top finishers in each age and gender division will be a turkey for first-place, chicken for second-place and third-place will receive a game hen.

Pre-register at Centralia Parks and Recreation office at 902 Johnson Road. Day-of-event registration is also accepted. For more information call 330-7688.

 

Santa to Ride the Steam Train

Tickets are on sale for steam train rides with Santa Claus on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 6, 7, 13 and 14. Rides will be at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m and 2 p.m. each day and will cost $8 per person for everyone older than one year old.

Candy canes, cider and cocoa will be served to passengers waiting for their turn to ride, and Santa will greet each child on the train.

Following the last ride Dec. 6, Santa will proceed to Chehalis downtown to take part in the annual parade at 3:30 p.m., followed by the tree lighting ceremony at the Vernetta Smith Chehalis Timberland Regional Library Commons area.
